Believed to have been discovered by the Portuguese in the early fifteenth century, the picturesque island of Madeira is famed for having one of the most idyllic climates in Europe and has been nicknamed the 'Garden Island'.  The region's capital, Funchal, is situated on a beautiful harbour that attracted early settlers.  Se Cathedral in Funchal is one of the most popular tourist sights in the area, though Funchal is also famed for its sunny weather and delicious fruit and vegetables.  Further afield, the town of Porto Santo is also worth a visit, being the home of a famed golf course and the museum-house of Christopher Columbus.  Other sights well worth taking in whilst on the island include the Levadas aqueduct system, the Sao Vicente Caves and the Jardim (Funchal) Botanical Garden.

Madeira is serviced by Madeira Airport (sometimes known as Santa Catarina or Funchal Airport), which is visited by several major airlines including easyJet, First Choice Airways, Thomsonfly, Thomas Cook Airways and XL Airways.  Porto Santo also has an active airport which receives flights from TAP Portugal, XL Airways and some charter flights.    The island is also popular with cruise ships and with private sea-craft.
